The Mumbai chapter of the IDIA team visited the Dabbawalas to address the issue of their children’s education and thereby be of assistance to them in their own little way.

On the 27thof June 2015 at Navayug Mansion, Grant Road, a pre-sensitization session was conducted by the Mumbai Chapter of the IDIA team for “Aamchi Mumbai kijaan” the Dabbawalas.

Soonafter the IDIA team conducted a similar session with the dabbawalas of Dadar West on the 2nd of July.

dabbawalla-1The turnout in both the sessions was great and the dabbawalas showed immense interest in discussing the concerns of their children’s education and future. The main purpose of this pre-sensitization drive was to spread awareness about the state of affairs with regards to legal education in our country amongst dabbawalas and how the IDIA Chapter of Mumbai seeks to provide the under privileged and under resourced children to fulfill their dream to pursue law in the future, not just by training them but also by funding their entire legal education.

The IDIA Team Members of the Mumbai Chapter comprising of Shachi Jain, Ekta Verma, Kumar Panda, Sakshi Sanghvi, Tanvi Jawale and Hitansh kept the session very interactive, attending to the queries posed by the Dabbawalas and igniting hope amongst them that increasing costs would not be barrier for their kids not being able to pursue a career in the legal field.

dabbawalla-2The Dabbawala’s have been invited with their children to a comprehensive sensitization session to be held in Govt. Law College on Sunday, 19th July, 2015. Some brief sessions were also taken at Churchgate Station, Eros Cinemas and Andheri Railway Station, where members interacted with dabbawalas at their workplace and informed them of the upcoming event.

These sensitizations with the  Dabbawalas has furthered IDIA’s vision of achieving diversity in and access to legal education across all stratas of the society. With most of the ground-work having been done, the Mumbai Chapter of the IDIA team has now set its foot on the path of an eventful road ahead, with hopes to locate and address many more of the marginalized.
