A Small Step through a Sensitization, a Giant Leap for IDIA

June 2015 marked yet another milestone in IDIA’s short but eventful history. In our five years, though we have established regional IDIA chapters across India and reached out to multifarious small towns and marginalized communities, covering the North-Eastern Region extensively has been an arduous task. With IDIA’s efforts permeating the states of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim in the region previously, it gives us immense pleasure to declare that earlier this month the state of Meghalaya has come on the IDIA map too.

This development is significant for two reasons:

First, IDIA conducted the sensitizations in Williamnagar, the headquarters of the East Garo Hills district in the state of Meghalaya. This is a district that is economically backward and ravaged by militancy, and the community here, much like in the rest of the north-eastern region, needs to be empowered.

Second, IDIA was invited over by the Deputy Commissioner of the district, Shri Cyril V. Darlong Diengdoh, an NLSIU alumnus himself, to conduct the IDIA sensitizations under the Chief Minister’s Career Guidance Scheme (CMGS) of the Government of Meghalaya. Hence, this marked the first occasion when IDIA conducted its sensitization programme with the active support of a State Government!

The team comprising of the Director of IDIA North East Team, Shri Arnab Roy and two volunteers from National Law University, Assam- Pritam Dey and Subornadeep Bhattacharjee, successfully conducted sensitizations across four schools and a government college, over three days from 16th-18th June 2015.

The institutions covered were:
1. Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Williamnagar
2. Rongrenggiri Government Higher Secondary School, Williamnagar
3. Educere Higher Secondary School, Williamnagar
4. Loyola Higher Secondary School, Williamnagar
5. Williamnagar Government College, Williamnagar

With the full support of the district administration, the team addressed more than 600 students. It encouraged the students to consider opting for law as a viable career possibility.

Our team conducted the IDIA Aptitude Test and successfully identified capable trainees across the five institutions. It is sincerely hoped that the scholars, with their resolve and commitment, work tirelessly and achieve the pinnacle of success to make all those associated with IDIA proud.

We are indebted to the Deputy Commissioner Shri Cyril V. Darlong Diengdoh, for having given IDIA an opportunity to interact with these children, bubbling with enthusiasm, who need to be given a proper direction to harness their infectious energy. With the support of the State Government, IDIA managed to expand its footprint into the picturesque state of Meghalaya. Here’s hoping that this small step will open the gates to such emotionally satisfying sensitizations in other districts of Meghalaya in the near future as well!
