IDIA successfully conducts ‘A Walk to Awake’, Mumbai

28 February, 2015, Mumbai — IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) kicked off operations in Mumbai this Saturday by successfully organising ‘A Walk to Awake’, which commencedwith a walk from Azad Maidan at 10:30am. The streets of Mumbai reverberated with the chants of IDIA volunteers and well-wishers who had come together for the eventand colorful posters and vibrant banners livened an unusually pleasant but otherwise dull Saturday morning.

During the walk, IDIA well-wishers and student volunteers from GLC, Mumbai, led by Mr. Arnab Roy (Director In-Charge of the IDIA Mumbai Chapter) and Ms. Sachi Jain (Team Leader of the IDIA Mumbai Chapter), interacted with the people of Mumbai to spread awareness of law as a career. Mr. Rahul Sarella, Partner, AmarchandMangaldas& Suresh Shroff& Co., Mumbai, also conducted a brief sensitisationsession in Kannada for students from Kannada Bhavan Society High School,a Kannada-medium School, enlightening them about the legal profession and how IDIA enables children from underprivileged communities to become leading lawyers and community leaders.

Minutes before the walk was slated to conclude, the famous Dabbawalas of Mumbai expressed a keen interest in understanding the IDIA movement. Mr. Rahul Sarella along with Ms. AmbareenMujawar (Chief Advisor, IDIA Mumbai Chapter) and Ms. EktaVerma (Deputy Team Leader, IDIA Mumbai Chapter) spoke to them about how the IDIA movement aims to empower underprivileged and marginalised communities in India by transform students from such communities into world-class lawyers and community leaders. Mr. Rahul Sarella also highlighted how IDIA not only enables access to legal education, but also empowers underprivileged children to achieve their full potential by sponsoring education at the leading law schoolsas well as providing mentorship and guidance through their law school tenures. The Dabbawalas promised their full support to spread the IDIA movement across the length and breadth of Mumbai through their networks.

The walk culminated at Churchgate station at 11:30 am with the performance of a short yet powerful street play titled ‘Aashayein’. Comprising a cast of IDIA volunteers Sana Siddiqui, SanchitaHule, SohamBannerjee, TanviJawale, Sourabh Jain and ItishaKhandelwal, the playdepicted the perceptional prejudice people foster about the profession of law and how the IDIA movement envisions facilitating greater access to legal education and contributing to the empowerment of marginalized communities through the field of legal education.

 

IMG-20150220-WA0002After the play, it was time for the third part of the event—the SensitisationProgramme and Aptitude Test at the Government Law College, Mumbai. It was heartening to see the large number of enthusiastic students who had turned up along with their parents for at GLC, Mumbai. IDIA Volunteers held an interactive sensitisation session to create awareness about law as a career option and provide an insight into life at leading law schools and cracking the various entrance examinations to gain admission to the same. An Aptitude Test was successfully conducted for interested candidates to identify and select those with potential from underprivileged communities.
