Shinto Mathews Abraham


shintoShinto Mathew Abraham is a third year B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) student at National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi. He hails from Pathanamthitta district in Kerala. He lived a major portion of his life overseas with his NRI parents. Throughout his school life, he was a talented speaker, debater, and elocutionist. Even in sports, he won accolades as a member of the school football team and as the vice-captain of the volleyball team. Shinto demonstrated amazing leadership qualities as the Head Boy of his school and was thus awarded the “Best Outgoing Student of the Year”.

However, with the advent of economic crisis in 2012, his father’s business went bust and his family was forced to leave the Gulf in between his 12th grade. With no secure option of re-building a financial capacity to support his family and putting Shinto’s schooling at stake, Mr. Abraham had to fall back upon his friends and family in Kerala for bare sustenance.Amidst all the unfortunate change in circumstances and the emotional pressure that comes with a loss of social standing, Shinto never gave up hope of completing his education. Just when financial problems brought Shinto’s studies to a halt, he received invaluable support from a friend’s family that allowed him to finish his schooling.

Shinto cracked CLAT in 2013 with an AIR of 503 and landed a seat at NUALS. He has been actively involved in organizing various programs in the university. In his first year at college, he was part of the Anti-Ragging Squad and got subsequently elected to the Executive Council of the NUALS Students’ Council. In the second year, he was elected as the Representative of the 2013-2018 batch to the Executive Council of the NUALS Moot Court Society. In the third year, he was part of the Anti-Ragging Committee and was elected as the Secretary to the Law & Society Forum, NUALS. He also coordinates the technical committee of NUALS.

Shinto currently heads the Legal Aid Clinic of NUALS. He has been the Student Coordinator of the Centre for Continuing Legal Education & Extension from 2014. He is all set to become the Student Coordinator of the Centre for Consumer Protection Law and Policy, NUALS from 2016.

Shinto has been consistently doing well in academics with a CGPA of 9 out of 10. He has participated as a speaker in the 21st M.C. Chagla Memorial Moot Court Competition hosted by GLC, Mumbai in September 2014. In 2015, he participated as a speaker in the 1st edition of NUSRL Trial Advocacy Moot Court Competition at Ranchi. In 2016, he was the researcher of the NUALS team that participated in the Asia-Pacific Rounds of Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition at NLSIU, Bangalore.

Shinto has been exploring different subject matters of law by his internships. He did a litigation internship in civil law under Advocate Santhosh Mathew, and in criminal law under Advocate S. Rajeev. He has done an editorial internship in ‘The Hindu’ newspaper daily. He has also interned in Trilegal, Mumbai for a month in December 2015. He is currently undergoing a maritime law internship in the chambers of George A. Rebello under the guidance of Advocate AshwinShanker in Mumbai.

Shinto is part of the College Volleyball team and also plays football. He has been the member of the IDIA Kerala Chapter team from 2013 and helps out with the sensitization activities. Shinto has his eyes set on a career in civil service to serve the mass better and he believes that the study of law would bring him closer to this goal.
